ON THE JACKET FLAPS – Here are background and lore connected with eighteen of our most famous American songs, from “Yankee Doodle” of colonial days to contemporary favorites. Mrs. Krythe has searched our history to find out how the songs came to be written, how they have been sung and enjoyed through the years, and interesting facts about the lives of the composers and poets. Many of the songs reflect great events and periods of our nation’s history. There are Northern songs, Southern songs, all-American songs. Often they came about when a new poem was fitted to a very old and familiar tune. This is true, of course, of Frances Scott Key’s poem for “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which he wrote while he was a short-term prisoner of the British outside Baltimore. John Howard Payne, author of “Home Sweet Home,” was an actor and playwright and a long-time friend of Washington Irving. He is mainly remembered for this one song, and his plays are now mostly forgotten. Stephen Foster, one of America’s earliest and best composers, is represented by “Old Folks at Home.” His was a sad life, a long and losing struggle against illness and poverty. Dan Emmett, a minstrel performer and composer, is remembered chiefly for “Dixie.” The courageous Julia Ward Howe wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” after a visit to the south. An Englishman, Harry B. Macarthy, wrote “The Bonnie Blue Flag,” which became a rallying song of the Secessionists during the Civil War. James Randall wrote “Maryland, My Maryland” while he was living in Louisiana, and he never lived in Maryland again after the war. “Tenting on the Old Camp Ground,” so popular with the Union forces, was written by Walter Kittredge, who entertained rather than fought with the Northern soldiers. James A. Bland, who wrote the famous “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” was of Free Negro background and for a long time couldn’t get into a minstrel troupe because he was black. He went to England, where he became a sensational success and entertained Edward VVII. When he returned to the United States years later, he had been forgotten. He died in poverty in 1911. It was only in 1950 that his song was made the Virginia state song. In addition, there are Katherine Lee Bates (“America the Beautiful”), Irving Berlin (“God Bless America” and “White Christmas”), Alfred Hay Malotte (“The Lord’s Prayer”), Johnny Marks (“Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer”), and others. The book is a solid piece of Americana and will make the songs reviewed even more enjoyable. Melody lines, words, and guitar chords are included for most of the songs.
