I’ll never forget driving for three days to get across the country to get to this park—the first of some twenty National Parks that I’d be visiting on my road trip—and seeing this bison as soon as I entered the park. It felt like a good welcome back to the West. (With a somewhat ironic song playing on Spotify.) If you haven’t been before, I really think this one is worth adding to the bucket list. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a stunning national park located in western North Dakota. It’s really a treasure trove of natural wonders, rich history, and diverse wildlife. The park itself is super rugged and scenic. It boasts breathtaking badlands scenery, with rugged rock formations, deep gorges, and rolling hills—as well as an abundance of animals and birds. If you’re planning on visiting, here’s a sample itinerary that I’d recommend: Day 1: – Morning: Hike the Wind Canyon Trail, a 2.5-mile loop offering stunning views of the Little Missouri River. – Afternoon: Explore the South Unit’s scenic loop drive, stopping at overlooks and trailheads. – Evening: Check out a ranger-led program at the amphitheater (seasonal). Day 2: – Morning: Hike the Buck Hill Trail, a 2.5-mile loop with great views of the badlands. – Afternoon: Visit the Maltese Cross Cabin, a historic ranch house. – Evening: Stargaze at the park’s dark skies. Day 3: – Morning: Hike the Caprock Coulee Trail, a 4-mile loop through unique rock formations. – Afternoon: Explore the North Unit’s scenic loop drive (a 30-minute drive from the South Unit). – Evening: Return to the South Unit to photograph the sunset.
